The Championship, League One and League Two all kicked off the 2026/27 season this weekend, and as always the opening weekend told us most about the eight clubs living through the biggest change of circumstances: the three sides who came down from the Premier League, the three who went up from League One, the three who dropped out of the Championship, the four who stepped up from League Two, and the pair who arrived fresh from the National League.
Here's how the promoted and relegated clubs across every EFL division actually got on — and what it means before a ball is even kicked in the Premier League, which doesn't open its own season until next weekend (21–24 August).
Championship opening weekend results: parachute clubs held to draws
Three clubs dropped out of the Premier League this summer — Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley and West Ham United — and all three opened their Championship campaigns without a win, but without a defeat either.

League One opening weekend: Sheffield Wednesday's away-day statement
This is where the opening weekend had its biggest storylines. Three clubs arrived in League One after relegation from the Championship — Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester City and Oxford United — and it was Wednesday who made the loudest early statement, winning away from home despite a turbulent summer off the pitch.

League Two opening weekend: York City announce themselves, relegated clubs struggle
Down in League Two, the storylines flipped. The two clubs promoted from the National League — York City and Rochdale — had contrasting fortunes, while the four clubs relegated from League One found life in the fourth tier a good deal tougher than expected.

- Newport County 3-0 Rochdale
York City's 3-2 win on their return to the Football League was one of the best results of the entire EFL weekend — a club that's waited a long time for this moment making sure it started with three points on the board. Rochdale's heavy defeat at Newport was a sharp reminder of how competitive League Two has become.

- Oldham Athletic 2-0 Port Vale
- Cheltenham Town 2-1 Rotherham United
- Grimsby Town 1-0 Exeter City
- Northampton Town 0-0 Swindon Town
It was a genuinely humbling weekend for the four clubs coming down from League One. Rotherham United, Port Vale and Exeter City all lost, and only Northampton Town avoided defeat, grinding out a goalless draw at home to Swindon. Dropping into League Two clearly comes with no guarantees — every one of these clubs will have targeted an instant return, and instead they're already playing catch-up after week one.
